On Sunday August 2 at the superb Beach Course at the 13th Beach Golf Links, 12 teams representing eight social golf clubs came together to battle it out in the 2nd 2009 Victorian Social Golf Club Championships (VSGCC) Qualifier. Designed by Tony Cashmore, the layout is a true links style course that has the exposure to the sea elements as one of the major challenges that players need to overcome when golfing their ball. Up for grabs were seven of the 28 places available to teams of four in the 2009 VSGCC Final.
47 golfers set out in a two-tee start from midday in sunny but breezy conditions. The morning had been calm at times but as the day wore on, the gusts of wind grew stronger and played havoc with any shots that got high in the air. The course and the conditions got the better of a few, but a large percentage of the field was able to adjust their game and hang tough to post a score for their team on a day when the CCR was three over the par and not one golfer managed to break their handicap.
Below we see Brett Morrissy from The Brumby Spikes cracking his drive on the testing par-four fifth hole. This shot was a good one and when the dust had settled it may have been the difference because Brett's team won the event by a single shot with a total of 95 points. They edged Nunawading 1 into second place on the podium and another shot further back was Laverton Park 2. The next 2009 VSGCC qualifier is in four weeks on Friday September 4 from midday at The Dunes Golf Links. With only two qualifiers remaining, it looks likes being the best chance to win a place in the final with a number of teams already queuing up to play the final qualifier at Growling Frog Golf Course from 8:30am on Saturday October 10.
