2009 ASGCC Champions from SP Social Golf Club celebrate with the new Robinson Trophy
The 2009 Australian Social Golf Club Championships (ASGCC) was staged on the Gold Coast in glorious conditions over three rounds at Lakelands GC, Robina Woods and Palm Meadows on August 24, 25 and 26. The event featured over $15,000 of prizes from sponsors the Radisson Resort Gold Coast, Wilson Staff, Inside Golf magazine, Dint Putters and Heathcote Winery. The courses were presented in great condition and brilliant sunshine was a feature as the temperature reached 30 degrees each day of the tournament.
2009 saw the introduction of a new Perpetual Trophy to be presented to the winning team. The trophy is named The Robinson Trophy for Brett Robinson, one of the founding participants and an inaugural champion who had played in the tournament every year, but was unable to take his place in 2009 for health reasons. Brett is from Robina Tavern SGC in Queensland and was at the event to present the trophy that carries his name to the 2009 champion team.
With scores of 106, 109 & 94 for a total of 309, SP SGC from Victoria won the title of 2009 Champion Australian Social Golf Club. The club gets its name from the four founders of the club who all happened to share the initials SP. They won this event in 2008 and the same line-up returned this year to make a successful defence. The five members who represented the club at the 2009 Championships were Steve Plunkett, Stive Cattipan, Mark Mahaffy, Phillip Cave and Brad Renshaw. In second place, five shots back on 304, were the Tour Fore Golfers from Queensland.
In the Ladies Division, first time entrant Wendy Gibney from Tour Fore Golfers shot 97 to win the title ahead of reigning champion Lynne Hindle from Watsonia AD SGC (Vic). In Men's A Grade, Brett Cullen, another first timer also from Tour Fore Golfers, scored 104 to edge out Adrian Chad from Baysiders (NSW). In Men's B Grade, Brian Garbutt from Gold Cross (Vic) scored 110 just ahead of Barry Hohn from Tour Fore Golfers. In Men's C Grade, Ivan Jones from Lake Claremont SGC (WA) tied with Steve Franklin from Robina Tavern SGC on 99 points, but Ivan took home the title on countback. In Men's D Grade, Bruce Cowan from Baysiders brought up the ton shooting 100 points to just shade Brad Renshaw from SP SGC.
Special mention must also go to Nunawading Social Golf Club (Vic) for setting a record with 15 club members in attendance at the tournament. They had a great week and set the standard for enjoying the challenge of the golf with a smile and a laugh. As if they hadn't had enough fun, Brad Carver put a cherry on top for them when, on the second last hole of the tournament, he scored a superb hole-in-one on the par three 17th at Palm Meadows. Well done Brad and congratulations to all who made the 2009 ASGCC a great event.
