Perfect conditions and a close finish at fourth 2009 Vic Social Golf Championships Qualifier

On Saturday October 10 at the Growling Frog Golf Course in Yan Yean to the north of Melbourne, 11 teams representing seven social golf clubs came together to battle it out in the fourth and final qualifying event for the 2009 Victorian Social Golf Club Championships (VSGCC). Conditions could not have been more perfect with a top of 20 degrees, sunshine, blue skies and barely a breath of wind all day. Designed by Graham Marsh, the Growling Frog layout is a challenging championship-style course with a very Australian flavour - it features huge gums on many holes and a local population of Eastern Grey Kangaroos. Up for grabs were the last places available for teams to qualify for the 2009 VSGCC Final on November 21.

42 golfers set out in a shotgun start from 8:30am in bright, sunny conditions with barely a breath of wind. Above we see Ash Turner from the glamorous crew at The Whitewash Cup, smashing a drive off the first tee at The Frog. This swing looks pretty good, but something seems out of whack about this photo.....oh, I know, it seems when Ash teed up, he was standing on the wrong side of the ball! Below is Leon Fent from Gumtree Estate SGC giving a perfect demonstration on the tee of the par four 7th hole of how to drive a golf ball without getting everything all upways-backside-front-inwards and inside-down-backout-frontways-downwards.

Below we see Grant McNab, Mark Gemmola and Warwick Stonehouse shaking hands on the ninth green after the round, with the conditions still just as sharp at the end of the day as they were when the field set out.

When the results were in, only two players in the field managed to break par and just a few shots separated the leaders in both the team and individual events. To see the team results and some of the leading individual scores for the day as well as a link to a comprehensive gallery with 100 photos, go to the 2009 VSGCC Qualifier Four Results page. The 2009 Final is in just under six weeks on Saturday November 21 at Waterford Valley Golf Course in Melbourne's eastern suburbs.
