On Sunday November 29 at Riverside Oaks Golf Course in Sydney's northwest, 13 teams representing nine social golf clubs came together to battle it out for an official State Championship at the inaugural New South Wales Social Golf Club Championships (NSW SGCC). Conditions were excellent for scoring with sunshine in the morning that gave way to overcast skies as a smoke haze drifted past the course from some nearby scrub fires. The overcast conditions for most of the day made the light even and the visibility very good for golf. Below is Daniel Flamminio from Heavenly Golf Club hitting his approach to the 16th hole with the smoke haze visible among the trees in the background.
46 golfers set out in a two-tee start from 7:00am with barely a breath of wind, setting things up for a great day for golf. The golfers came ready to play and most made sure they also had a good time while they tried to winkle a score from the challenging and visually striking Riverside Oaks layout. Below Peter Ipkendanz from Dubbo Golf Club watches his mate David Harper tee off on the first hole. They drove a long way to play in the event and they made sure they had a great time by travelling on Saturday, playing 9 holes and enjoying the quality accommodation on offer at Riverside Oaks.
The tournament is played as a mixed event with male and female golfers competing together for the same prizes in the team, individual and novelty categories. The big story of the day was the fine win in the team-of-four event by Jarrod Hillier, Paul Hangan, Larry Stephens and Ian Gribble from Stocky Social Golf Club to take out the inaugural New South Wales Social Golf Club Championships. However, the fellas were almost trumped on the day by one of the teams from Cessnock Hotel Social Golf Club that was made up of four ladies from the club who had come determined to have a good time and the also happened to post some great scores to finish as runners-up in the Championships. There were helped in no small part by Margo Lennox who not only shot the best round of the day to take out the individual event, but along the way she picked up the Longest Drive prize for her team with a super tee shot on the par five 10th hole.
Above we see Margo showing her style in a greenside bunker on the 6th hole, enjoying knocking the blokes off with her Long Drive on the 10th fairway and posing proudly with some of the spoils of victory after the presentation. When all the results were in, a horde of players in the field had given par a shake and just a few shots separated the placings in both the team and individual events.
